Sales forecast accuracy.
Most B2B sales organizations miss their forecast at least once a year, and only about one in five typically lands within 5% of the number.
Last updated: September 2026
Four in five sales and finance leaders missed a quarterly sales forecast in the past year, and only 20% say their forecasts typically land within 5%, according to Xactly’s 2024 Sales Forecasting Benchmark Report.1 Confidence is low too: only 45% of sales leaders and sellers have high confidence in their organization’s forecast accuracy, according to Gartner.3
A forecast within 5% of actual is a strong result by these benchmarks. Missing by 10% or more is common: 43% of leaders in Xactly’s survey do.
Forecast accuracy at a glance.
How far off forecasts typically are.
Xactly asked 405 North American sales and finance leaders how far their sales forecasts are typically off. Combined results:
| Share of leaders | What it means | Source | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5% off | 20% | Strong accuracy; the benchmark most teams aim for | Xactly 20241 |
| 5–9% off | 38% | Common, but enough to move hiring and spend decisions | Xactly 20241 |
| 10–19% off | 36% | A material miss for most boards and finance teams | Xactly 20241 |
| 20–25% off | 6% | Forecast is not a reliable planning input | Xactly 20241 |
| Over 25% off | 1% | Forecast process has effectively broken down | Xactly 20241 |
| Sales vs. finance | 52% vs. 66% | 52% of sales leaders are off by 10% or more; 66% of finance leaders are usually off by less than 9% | Xactly 20241 |
Self-reported survey data (405 respondents, March 2024).2 Sales and finance leaders see the same forecast differently, which is itself a sign of how much judgment goes into the number.
What the numbers mean.
Forecast accuracy is mostly a data and discipline problem. Only 47% of respondents in Gartner’s survey believed their organization had high-quality data,3 and Ebsta found 44% of the contacts sellers interact with never reach CRM, a quarter of them decision makers.4 A forecast built on incomplete deal data will miss, however good the model.
It is also a skills problem. Reps forecast what they believe, and belief is only as good as their discovery and qualification. Deals with a confirmed decision process, a quantified business case, and an engaged economic buyer forecast better, because the rep actually knows where the deal stands.
The stakes are rising. Clari Labs’ survey of 400 enterprise revenue and IT leaders found 87% of enterprises missed their 2025 revenue targets.6 Challenger’s January 2024 poll found fewer than 20% of sales leaders rated their forecast as “predictable.”5 Leaders who can call the number within 5% stand out.
Commit deals keep slipping to next quarter?
We teach reps to qualify and inspect deals the same way, so the forecast reflects what buyers have actually agreed to.
How to improve forecast accuracy.
Use one qualification standard
When every rep defines “commit” differently, the forecast is an average of opinions. A shared standard for what must be true at each stage makes calls comparable.
Sales qualification training 02 · InspectCoach managers to inspect deals
Forecast calls should test evidence, not collect guesses. Train managers to ask for proof of the buyer’s decision process and timeline.
Sales leadership training 03 · Close planBuild mutual close plans
A dated plan agreed with the buyer, covering legal, procurement, and signatures, shows whether a deal can really close this quarter.

Clients report a 30% improvement in close rates, a 25–80% increase in next steps generated, and 15–30% faster sales cycles. Clearer next steps and shorter cycles give managers firmer ground for the forecast.
“Rarified air is the best way to explain it. The process gave our team a shared language for every deal. Forecasting got sharper and our close rate climbed almost immediately.”

Common questions about sales forecast accuracy.
01What is sales forecast accuracy?
Sales forecast accuracy is how close a team’s predicted revenue for a period comes to the revenue it actually closes, usually shown as a percentage difference. Accelerain Training works on the qualification and deal-inspection skills that make the forecast reliable.
02What is a good sales forecast accuracy?
Within 5% of actual is strong. Only 20% of sales and finance leaders say their forecasts typically land that close, according to Xactly’s 2024 Sales Forecasting Benchmark Report; 43% are off by 10% or more.
03How often do companies miss their sales forecast?
Most miss at least once a year. Xactly’s 2024 survey of 405 leaders found four in five missed a quarterly sales forecast in the past year, and over half missed two or more times.
04How confident are sales leaders in their forecasts?
Not very. Gartner found only 45% of sales leaders and sellers have high confidence in their organization’s forecasting accuracy. Challenger’s January 2024 poll found fewer than 20% rate their forecast as predictable.
05Why are sales forecasts inaccurate?
Incomplete data and inconsistent deal judgment. Only 47% of Gartner survey respondents believed their organization had high-quality data, and Ebsta and Pavilion found 44% of contacts sellers interact with never reach CRM.
06How do you calculate forecast accuracy?
Divide the absolute difference between forecast and actual revenue by actual revenue, then subtract from 100%. A $10M forecast against $9.5M actual is about 95% accurate, a miss of roughly 5%.
07How can a sales team improve forecast accuracy?
Standardize qualification and inspect deals on evidence. With 80% of leaders missing at least one quarterly forecast per Xactly, a shared definition of each stage and mutual close plans with buyers are the most practical fixes.
